Fire-Rated Transparency for a New Cultural Landmark in Spain

The transformation of the former Bank of Spain headquarters in Santander into the New Reina Sofía Museum of Santander represents a significant investment in Spain’s cultural infrastructure. As the first associated center of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the facility will house important contemporary art collections and archival materials, creating a new destination for research, education, and public engagement.

Museums present unique fire safety challenges. Beyond protecting occupants, building systems must help safeguard irreplaceable artworks, historical documents, and cultural assets. Fire-rated glazed assemblies play a critical role in compartmentation strategies by helping contain fire and smoke while maintaining visibility, daylight transmission, and architectural openness.
For this project, the Alufire AS85 EI60 Hinged Door system was selected to provide 60 minutes of fire resistance within a refined aluminum-framed glazed design. The system enables protected circulation routes and compartment boundaries without introducing the visual barriers often associated with traditional fire doors. This is particularly important in museums, where transparency, wayfinding, and visitor experience are key design considerations.
Tecfire’s expertise in fire-rated glazing systems makes it a strong fit for complex cultural and institutional projects where regulatory compliance, architectural integration, and long-term performance must work together. The deployment of the Alufire AS85 EI60 at the New Reina Sofía Museum of Santander demonstrates how advanced fire-rated glass technology can support both life safety objectives and contemporary museum architecture.
